Our aim at ammi flowers is to deliver beautiful floral bouquets and displays as sustainably as we can.
The floristry industry does have a waste problem so this is a work in progress. We are constantly striving to improve by working with our suppliers and evolving in store ourselves to make our shop as eco-friendly as we possibly can.
Whilst many of our flowers are imported and come in plastic sleeves, we are working with our supplier to encourage growers to use paper sleeves and we are trying to source more English grown flowers and are even growing some of our own flowers and foliage locally.
Do not forget you can compost your flowers and foliage once they have gone over. Alternatively, you can press them or invest in one of our dried flower hangers and have a go at drying your flowers.
Whilst most of the plants we stock do come in plastic pots the plastic trays they are delivered to us in are now returned to our supplier to be recycled so no more plastic trays going into our bins.
We stock Jungle feed plant food which is a slow-release plant food made from insect lavea poop!
We package our bouquets in high quality sturdy brown kraft plastic free boxes to ensure stability during transportation. The boxes are biodegradable, recyclable and the raw materials come from carefully managed European renewable resources where more trees are planted each year than felled.
The brown paper wrap we use is renewable, recyclable, bio-degradable, compostable at home, uses natural raw materials and is FSC Certified.
To ensure that your flowers arrive in the best condition we do send them out in cellophane water bubbles. We use biodegradable cellophane which biodegrades 5 times quicker than standard florists cellophane. It breaks down naturally, does not leave behind any microplastics and is made in the UK reducing the carbon footprint.
Our tissue paper has a high recycled content, is recyclable, is made using chlorine free pulp and is SFI certified.
We tie all our bouquets with natural jute string, we use paper tape, Interflora ribbons used are made in the UK using 100% recycled plastic.
We are currently trying to source a suitable alternative to our current option.
We use a local printer for our business cards, they are plastic free and 100% FSC with at least 10% recycled materials, the inks are dry toner using a cellulose (non-oil) base.
We now only print out till and card machine receipts if the customer request them. Our bills are all received online and our account customer invoices are sent online too. We currently write out customer orders but are looking at alternative ways of doing this too.
Our gift vouchers are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
Our greetings cards are designed and printed in Hertfordshire they are recyclable and made from sustainable sources.
We have not stocked balloons for a couple of years now due to the detrimental impact on the environment.
We have selected our energy supplier to be one that is committed to providing us electricity from renewable sources.
We have recently replaced the lights in the shop with LED lights which should help reduce our energy consumption.
We have been concentrating on what comes into our store, it is now time to look at what is leaving the store and improve on our composting of green waste and reducing the amount we send to landfill. We are struggling with this as despite asking the council for a green bin they will not provide to us as we are a business even though we have said we will pay and commercial waste collectors do not supply green bins so this is an ongoing battle. Whilst we would love to compost this at home, we create too much for this to be feasible at the moment. Any suggestions welcome.
Cardboard goes for recycling.
Our staff also do their best using refillable water bottles and we have our own crockery and cutlery so no take away items needed here. We even have eco-friendly washing up liquid and recycled paper loo rolls (too much information?!)
As I said this is a work in progress and I know we can do better and are constantly striving to find alternatives that are better for our customers and the planet in the most affordable way possible.
